Testimonials - Paweł Sala
Ironically, I believe that the most important part of the film is what remains unseen. However, the space beyond the frame is not a black hole. The greater the contribution made by the sound engineer, the more this black hole influences the viewer’s imagination.
Agata Chodyra has done an amazing job by treating the whole acoustic space as a work of music. This approach is very much up my alley, because I do not particularly value verism and sticking to rules imitating the reality. The way in which Agata designed this reality was in line with the suggestions offered by the footage. I am very happy that our paths had crossed and admire her sensitivity, as well as determination to achieve the desired effect.
All those who have had the chance to see
„Mother Teresa of Cats” in a proper theatre will notice the richness of nuances in the acoustic space surrounding the viewer. The screen is but a keyhole and everything else is in what we hear. I am also a radio director by education and have had the opportunity work with the best sound engineers and designers in the Polish Radio Theatre. Agata’s professionalism and musical sensitivity match theirs.
Here is another proof that Agata is one of the best sound engineers out there. “Mother Teresa of Cats” is a typical low-budget production, which to most viewers is a synonym for “unprofessional”. Meanwhile, the film, and especially the sound in it, meets all international requirements. Agata did a laborious job to make sure that the difficult conditions we had been working in did not affect the sound in any way.
Agata is one of those people. By her emotional engagement in the project, I could tell that it was as much my film as hers. Knowing this made my work easier. If I ever get to make another film, I will certainly ask Agata to work with me, because her professionalism guarantees that it will impress viewers at any film festival in the world.
